Charles Kettering was the inventor of the electric cash register, self-starting engine, the first battery ignition, the automobile generator, guided the development of better gasoline, Freon® and the railroad diesel engine, co-founder of Delco, a key innovator at General Motors for 31 years, and founded Sloan-Kettering Institute for cancer research with GM president Alfred P. Sloan.
